Council of Europe: United around common values and in solidarity and support for Ukraine

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković attended the 4th summit of the Council of Europe in Reykjavik. In his address at the Central Panel: "United for Europe", the Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction with participating in this summit, which, he said, confirms and emphasizes the values that form the foundations of the Council of Europe, namely the protection of human rights, democracy, the rule of law and fundamental freedoms.

He particularly emphasized the role of the European Court of Human Rights because, as he said, the fundamental values of freedom and democracy were attacked in Ukraine.
 
He said that the Russia's aggression against Ukraine awakened Europe from the prosperity and peace it enjoyed for decades after the Second World War, the same as in time when Milošević's regime attacked several countries of the former Yugoslavia, including Croatia.
 
In this context, the Prime Minister said that Croatia has joined the register of damages for Ukraine, and emphasized strong solidarity with that country, which also uses Croatian experience in punishing war crimes.
 
"We think that in a multilateral and international environment, the Council of Europe represents an added value that protects the rule of law," concluded Plenković.
 
In a statement to the media, Prime Minister Plenković said that the goal of the 4th Summit of the Council of Europe, on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the existence and work of this organization, was to reaffirm its role and the foundations it protects.
 
He also said that the Declaration, which was adopted at the end of the summit, has the main message - united around common values and united in solidarity and support for Ukraine.
