Interior Minister Davor Božinović opened today in Karlovac the international firefighting competition in traffic accident rescue, the 2nd Croatia Rescue Challenge, in which 32 teams from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina are participating.

Based on last year's edition of the competition, the Croatian Fire Association (HVZ) became a member of the World Rescue Organization (WRO), according to whose rules the competition takes place. The organizers of this year's two-day competition are the Karlovac Fire Department and the Karlovac Public Fire Department.

There are six members in each team, one of whom is a health worker, and according to the protocol and a special scenario, they have to perform a simulation of rescue from car wrecks. They are judged by six licensed judges from Great Britain, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Romania.

Minister Božinović emphasized that the Government stands behind the firefighters.

"We are here to support them and to provide them with all the conditions in order to raise firefighting and all emergency services to a higher level. We can only be better if we cooperate and exchange experiences to save as many lives as possible and reduce the risks for firefighters to a minimum," he said.

He also emphasized that there is no more humane activity than saving human lives.

"It's not your job, but a calling and a life commitment. That's why you have my deep affection," he told the firefighters.
