A memorial service was held for Croatia's iconic pop singer Oliver Dragojevic at the Croatian National Theatre in the southern coastal city of Split on Tuesday. He died on Sunday aged 70.

The ceremony was attended by senior state officials and the singer's family and friends.

Speaking to the press before the service, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said that Oliver Dragojevic's departure was a great loss for Croatian culture, music and society. "He was the soul of Croatia. What he gave to many generations of people in the last half-century has marked us all, it is part of our identity, our emotions and our formative years," Plenkovic said. "He was a great man and this is the least we can do for him today," he added.
