Parliament votes in favour of new veterans' affairs minister
Retired Brigadier-General Tomo Medved is Croatia's new Veterans' Affairs Minister after parliament took a vote of confidence on Monday with 88 MPs of the 130 present voting in favour of his appointment, 30 voting against and 15 abstaining.
After the vote, the new minister was sworn in.
Prior to that, Medved was given unanimous support by the parliamentary veterans' affairs committee.
Speaker Zeljko Reiner congratulated Medved on the appointment and wished him success in his new post.
Medved was a participant in the Homeland War in the 90s. He has a Bachelor of Economics and is a military academy officer. He was born in 1968 in Cetingrad. He voluntarily enlisted in 1990 in special police forces to participate in the Homeland War and one year later commanded a company. From 1993 to 1994 he was the chief-of-staff of the 1st Guard Brigade.
After Croatia's accession to NATO, Medved was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general and in 2011 he retired from the army.
He is the leader of a veterans association and a member of the Croatian Democratic Union's veterans' committee. He holds a number of decorations for his military service.
Medved was appointed to head the Veterans' Affairs Ministry after Mijo Crnoja resigned from that post due to several scandals more than a month ago.
