Plenkovic offers best wishes to French president and PM on Bastille Day

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on Saturday offered his best wishes to French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Bastille Day, the French national holiday.

"As Croatia just marked the fifth anniversary of its membership in the European Union, I am glad that today our two countries share a common vision of Europe, which must better protect its citizens and better embody the added value of a common response to challenges that go beyond our national frameworks, such as global warming, economic globalisation, the rise of populism, the migration crisis or terrorism," the Croatian PM said in his message.

"I hope that as part of our strategic partnership we will have a chance to work together on strengthening bilateral relations, by which way we can only bring our views closer on the European level. For Croatia, which has just marked the fifth anniversary of its EU membership, the priority is to join the Schengen area and the euro zone, and I believe I will be able to count on your support so that Croatia can join as soon as possible the circle of countries that call for a more closely connected and stronger Europe," he added.

France celebrated its national holiday on Saturday with a traditional military parade on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris in 1789, which marked the beginning of the French Revolution.
