PM Oreskovic after Berlin meeting with chancellor Merkel: Croatian positions on this topic are very clear

 The risk of reopening the Balkan migrant route exists, but there is no reason to worry about the situation as it is stable along Croatia's border, PM Oreskovic said on Saturday evening upon his return from an informal meeting in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and their counterparts from a few more EU members.

The Berlin meeting, including prime ministers: Christian Kern of Austria, Boyko Borisov of Bulgaria  Miro Cerar of Slovenia apart from Merkel and Oreskovic, focused on migrants and refugees and the deal to this effect between the EU and Turkey.

Chancellor Merkel started a series of meetings with EU members' leaders, and the first round of such meetings was this past Monday when Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi hosted her and French President Francois Hollande. In the meantime, Merkel met with other leaders of other EU members, and the consultations are part of preparations for an EU summit meeting in Bratislava, scheduled for 16 September,  on the future of the EU following the UK’s vote to leave.

Addressing the press upon his arrival at Zagreb Airport, Oreskovic said that discussions at those consultations had been informal.

"Positions on this topic are not new. If they change, I will consult with the Croatian president and all who should be acquainted with Croatia's position," Oreskovic said in response to criticism from President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic who on Friday insisted that the caretaker Prime Minister should have consulted key political figures in Croatia before the meeting with Merkel because the migration issue was too serious "for someone to trust several foreign policy advisers."
