Tourism is one of the most competitive sectors of Croatia's economy, however, there is still a need to enhance the quality and variety of services, make the peak season longer and increase employment in that sector, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Monday at a presentation of tenders, the total value of which is 54.3 million kuna, for boosting the tourist trade's competitiveness in 2017.

The tenders refer to two topics, with one of them being the competitiveness of the tourist economy and the other refers to improving the access of vulnerable groups to the labour market in the hospitality and tourism sectors.

Promoting the schemes, Prime Minister Plenkovic said that his cabinet paid additional attention to tourism, which ensured revenues in the amount of 9.5 billion euros last year.

"Tourism's share in (Croatia's) BDP stands at 18%," the premier said.

Minister Gari Cappelli said that funds earmarked by the government for tourism were aimed at making tourist trade services stronger.
