ZAGREB, July 24 (Hina) - New members of the National Committee for the Suppression of Human Trafficking on Thursday held a session to discuss a report on the implementation of the Operational Plan for the Suppression of Human Trafficking in 2007.
The session was held under the chairmanship of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Family Affairs, War Veterans and Inter-generational Solidarity, Jadranka Kosor.
The 2007 Operational Plan included a number of activities aimed at the prevention of human trafficking. Last year, Croatia adopted a law on aliens and a law on the ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on Action in Trafficking in Human Beings.
In 2007, 15 victims of trafficking in humans were identified - nine were Croatian nationals, three were from Serbia, two from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and one was from Moldova.
Two victims of human trafficking have been identified this year.
Last year, 10 people were punished for involvement in people smuggling.
Two projects for the prevention of people smuggling are currently being implemented - one by the Ministry of Family Affairs, pertaining to the education of members of family centres, and the other one by the Ministry of Defence and the Office for Human Rights, pertaining to the education of members of peace missions.
In the latest report by the US State Department, Croatia was ranked in the first group of 15 countries in the world which have the best results in the fight against people smuggling.
