The government on Thursday dissolved the Vukovar City Council and relieved the mayor of this eastern Croatian town and his deputies of their duties as they failed to adopt a city budget, thus launching a procedure for calling the early election.
The government will appoint a commissioner who will be in charge of the affairs until a new City Council and a new mayor are elected.
"At the end of last year, the Vukovar City Council did not adopt a budget, rather a decision on interim financing. As the budget has not been adopted by March 31, the government dissolves the City Council and relieves the mayor, in accordance with the Law on Local Self-Government Units, and launched the procedure for calling the election. After this is announced in the National Gazette, a commissioner will step into office," Public Administration Minister Arsen Bauk said.
At its session on Thursday, the government also allocated HRK 5 million from the state budget to Osijek to co-finance the costs of preventing a mosquito invasion in this eastern city. The Osijek city authorities secured another HRK 4.5 million for this purpose.
