Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic on Wednesday instructed the ministers of finance, internal affairs and justice to determine the amount of uncollected state claims at the time when the current government came to power.
Milanovic asked that it be established in each concrete case, including the biggest ones, why state claims had not been collected and why the accrual of interest on those claims had been allowed.
"We are talking about millions, hundreds of millions of kuna that have gone to waste," the PM said at the beginning of a government session.
The Croatian public must know those data, so that we can finally close that chapter, said Milanovic, adding that after it came to power, the current government did not do it so as not to be accused of revenge-seeking.
"Two years ago, we failed to do it, possibly to avoid accusations of retaliation, but someone had allowed the debt to be incurred and to not be dealt with all those years."
Milanovic added that he was referring to all types of debt, both tax debt and millions of kuna of uncollected spot fines.
"We are not accusing or reporting anyone, but I call on state institutions to inspect the material. The hierarchy of responsibility is completely clear - clerk, chief, regional office, state office, minister, Parliament. That is what we can do so as to avoid possible accusations in the future," Milanovic said.
