Milanovic: Croatia cannot be subject of donors' conference

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said that the issue of a donors' conference for flood-hit Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, which has been announced by Slovenian Prime Minister Alenka Bratusek, was not on the agenda of the meeting in Brussels on Tuesday evening.

Speaking to the press upon arrival for an informal EU summit on the results of the European Parliament elections, Bratusek said she would propose a donors' conference to help Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia deal with the huge damage caused by recent floods.

"I will duly consider the proposal, but I am not certain that it is a topic of today's meeting. Secondly, the EU has funds for that purpose. If it does not have them for Bosnia and Herzegovina, perhaps it can find a way. For Croatia, the rules are clear: it is a member of the EU and cannot be the subject of a donors' conference," Milanovic said when asked for a comment.

Milanovic said that once the extent of the damage was determined Croatia would seek compensation from the European Solidarity Fund, provided that the damage exceeds 0.6 per cent of GDP, because only in such cases can assistance be obtained from that fund.
