Deputy Prime Minister Grcic: We're firmly behind our measures

"I can only reiterate what I have said in recent days, and that's a reduction of VAT on a basket of agricultural products and a new pay rise. We have made all the calculations, we know how much it costs and that it is possible," Grcic said.

Grcic said that the two measures were important because they would provide a direct boost to the economy. "We want to boost the economy, first and foremost with tax measures, so that  we can feel their benefits very soon."

When asked where the money for these measures would come from, he said that it would come from the budget. "We will give up a portion of budget revenues for the benefit of the economy, so that it can be used to produce even stronger growth. And when the economy grows, budget revenues also grow; that's our formula."

Grcic confirmed that these were measures for the next term in office and would be launched right at the start of the term.

When asked if the main points of the election platform of the leading opposition HDZ party were feasible at all, Grcic said he was not impressed by that programme. "I must agree with many analysts who have said that it is more like a wish list than a list of specific measures, such as those we are offering. We are very specific about what we are going to do. That's why I'm not much impressed by it."
