Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic on Tuesday commented on a statement by his German counterpart about a possible return of refugees to Slovenia and Croatia, saying that by its treatment of refugees Croatia had proved to the world that unlike the countries the refugees were coming from, it was a humane and civilised country.
"Technically, this would be impossible because before that you would have to go to some other European countries, countries that are not Greece. First you would have to go to Austria and Hungary and only then can you reach Croatia, but the deal has already been made," said Ostojic, adding that Croatia was still prepared to accept 1,650 people, in line with an EU plan regarding the relocation of Syrian refugees.
The ambassadors of Canada, Japan, Ireland, Sweden and Slovenia on Tuesday visited the reception centre in Opatovac to which refugees have been pouring in over the past 20 days on their path to west European countries. They were briefed about the function of the centre and local services as well as about the conditions in the refugee tent settlement.
According to the Croatian Ministry of the Interior, a total of 121,763 refugees entered Croatia since the start of the refugee crisis on 16 September.
