Franciscan Museum in Vukovar opens its doors to visitors

The museum at the Franciscan Monastery in Vukovar was formally opened on Friday after an HRK 15.5 million project for its renovation was completed.

The museum was rebuilt as part of a project to present the cultural and historical heritage of the Franciscan Monastery, established in 1723, as a local tourist attraction, and the funds for its reconstruction were provided from the European Fund for Regional Development and the Croatian fund for the reconstruction and development of the City of Vukovar.

The president underscored the significant role of Franciscan monks in the development of Vukovar's culture, science and education and in the preservation of local traditional values and cultural heritage.

"The Franciscan Order in Vukovar was deeply intertwined with Vukovar in times of prosperity and in times of sadness, aggression and expulsion, and it is intertwined with the present and future of Vukovar," she added.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said that the museum supplements the abundant cultural heritage of Vukovar.

It gives evidence of the centuries-long work of friars in Vukovar, he said, praising them for their religious and scientific work.

"Now that the city is free, now that Croatia is free and we have accomplished our strategic and national goals, we have the opportunity, being aware of the heritage and symbol of the city of Vukovar, to build an inclusive society and to build it on forgiveness, reconciliation, and joint future," the premier said.
