Plenkovic: Stricter measures will be taken if necessary

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Sunday that all appropriate measures were being taken to stem the spread of the coronavirus epidemic in Croatia and that stricter measures would be put in place if necessary.

Plenkovic was speaking to reporters after voting in the internal election of his HDZ party in which he is running for a second term as leader.

He was asked by reporters whether the decision to close catering establishments in Istria County would apply to the rest of the country.

The infection in Croatia is spreading at a moderate rate, which allows for tracking of infected people, he said, noting that the virus was imported from other countries where the epidemic is more widespread.

"That's why we are taking all measures that are appropriate to this moment. If it comes to a situation that will require stricter measures, we will certainly take them," the prime minister said, emphasising the importance of public health safety.

Asked what steps would be taken if community transmission was confirmed, Plenkovic said that all possibilities were being taken into account and that in such a case measures would be proportionate to the situation at hand.

He said that the government would try to ensure a normal life and that it was prepared for challenges facing the entire nation.

As for the possible closure of borders, he said that the government would see what to do about it given that many countries had started closing their borders.
