54 newly diagnosed COVID-19 cases, in Croatia 402 people infected per million inhabitants

In Croatia, there are 402 people infected with the novel coronavirus per million inhabitants, which is perceived as a good result compared to the statistics in Spain, Italy, Austria, Serbia and Slovenia, Health Minister Vili Beros told a news conference in Zagreb on Tuesday.

For instance, in Spain there are 3,690 cases per million inhabitants, in Italy 2,638, Austria 1,568, Serbia 464 and Slovenia 587, he said.

Also, in Croatia 1.82% of the confirmed cases have to date ended fatally. Beros said that unfortunately in Italy, this percentage stood at 12.8% and in Spain 10.5%, Serbia's data was 2.1% , in Austria 2.7%, and Slovenia had 4.6% of the cases that ended fatally.

The head of the Croatian Institute of Public Health, Krunoslav Capak, said that the number of the confirmed cases per million inhabitants and the death rate were comparable parameters.

Capak underscored that in the last 24 hours Croatia saw the highest number of fatalities in a single day - 6. Six people have died since Monday, and the death toll now stands at 31.

Capak warned that the virus had made its way into homes for senior citizens and the infirm, who are at the highest risk of contracting the disease.

Therefore in recent days, containment measures concerning this segment of society have been made more strict, he added.

As for school-leaving exams, Capak admitted that it was still too early for the authorities to forecast the exact dates for those exams.

"If the epidemiological situation becomes favourable, school-leaving exams can be organised provided that social distancing measures are observed," he said.

"In the last 24 hours there have been 54 newly diagnosed COVID-19 cases, which puts the total number of patients at 1,704," Minister Beros said.

Thirty-four patients are on ventilators.

We have 415 recoveries, which is 15 more than yesterday, and of those 415 cases, 117 patients have recovered at home, Beros said.

He added that 357 people had been hospitalised, one more than on Monday and that 932 people infected with COVID-19 were recovering at home.

"A total of 18,359 patients have been tested, including 569 new ones, which puts the percentage of positive cases out of the total number of samples at 9.28%," said Beros.

The average age of the patients is 49.94 and the share of women infected with the virus has increased to 51.3%.
