Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on Monday received Julie Bishop, the first Australian Foreign Minister to ever visit Croatia.

Plenkovic expressed satisfaction with the strengthening of political dialogue and business contacts between the two countries. Croatia is recording a permanent increase in the number of visiting Australian tourists and the authorities are confident that the opening of Croatian-Australian chambers of commerce in several Australian states would help step up economic relations and increase investments, notably in transport, energy and the food industry.

Both sides want to strengthen cooperation in the science and education sector by launching an exchange programme between the University of Zagreb and Macquarie University from Sydney.

Croatia also takes into account the large community of Croats living in Australia, notably when it comes to the preservation of the language and culture. Croatia particularly appreciates the Australian government's decision to recognise the Croatian language and finance Croatian classes in state schools.

The two countries are marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
