An agreement on a non-repayable grant in the amount of 141.5 million kuna (EUR 18.6 million) from European Union funds for a new dormitory in Varazdin was signed in that northern Croatian city on Monday.

The agreement was signed by EU Funds Minister Tomislav Tolusic, Zagreb University Rector Damir Boras and Croatian Central Finance and Contracting Agency director Tomislav Petric.

The total value of the new dormitory with 600 beds stands at 142.2 million kuna.

The dormitory is expected to be built in the 2017-2018 school year.

First Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko, who attended today's agreement-signing ceremony, welcomed this project.

First Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko visited the Ducati Komponenti company in Ludbreg, north Croatia on Monday for the beginning of construction of a HRK 42 million plant for the manufacture of low-voltage condensers and smart meter coils.

The 4,000 square metre plant is expected to hire 30 workers over the next year.

"Every initiative which creates jobs makes us happy. In the current state of the Croatian economy, with more than 100,000 jobs lost over the past four years, with so many people emigrating from Croatia because they can't find work, this investment indeed makes us happy," said Karamarko.

He said the government would work to make room for entrepreneurs, good investments and the absorption of European Union funds. We were very weak in absorbing EU funds over the past four years, which resulted in devastating job losses, he said.

Karamarko said that judging by investments and the approach to work, the economy in north Croatia was "deeply" in Europe.

Entrepreneurship and Crafts Minister Darko Horvat, who accompanied Karamarko, said north Croatia attracted investments and that the new plant was an example of a complete north-west Croatia.

He said the new plant represented a continuity in Ducati Komponenti's business. He said the company's previous investment was HRK 7.7 million. The company applied on time for Entrepreneurship Ministry incentives, using about HRK 1.5 million for the first investment, he added.
