Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic announced on Thursday that after today's Cabinet session a preliminary meeting for the preparation of a 2018 budget would be held.

"In light of the political stability which we have ensured, the government needs to continue the priority tasks that are part of our programme and I expect maximum effort from all of you to put the focus on fulfilling our economic goals as of this autumn," Plenkovic said at the start of the Cabinet session.

He said that after the session Finance Minister Zoran Maric would hold a preliminary meeting for the preparation of next year's budget so that all relevant government departments could organise themselves in a timely fashion for budget planning.

The government proposed for the third time amendments to the Penal Code to incorporate the provisions of the European Union directive on criminal sanctions for market abuse.

It also proposed stricter criteria in substituting prison sentences with community service, specifying that only terms of up to one year in prison, or fines of up to 360 daily incomes, can be substituted with community service.
