Plenkovic calls for dialogue with Slovenia

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said in the eastern town of Pozega on Monday that the outstanding border issues with Slovenia have to be resolved through dialogue and that minor incidents in Savudrija Bay following the decision of the Arbitral Tribunal were "part of the traditional methodology."

"If certain violations occur in Piran Bay, or rather Savudrija Bay, or in any other way, it has been part of the traditional methodology over the past few years that Croatia sends a protest note to Slovenia and occasionally Slovenia sends a protest note to Croatia. My main message though is that we have to continue dealing with the outstanding border issues with Slovenia through dialogue," Plenkovic said after a meeting with county, city and municipal officials.

"Based on the unanimous decision of the Croatian parliament in the summer of 2015, we wish to develop good and sincere relations with Slovenia as a neighbouring and friendly country," Plenkovic said and recalled that he would be meeting with his Slovenian counterpart, Miro Cerar, in Ljubljana on 12 July.

With regard to the Distraint Law, which was sent to parliament by the government while the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was still in a coalition with the Bridge party, Plenkovic said that certain amendments would probably be on the agenda for the government session on Thursday so that they could be debated in parliament before the summer recess.

"Based on analysis and additional information that we obtained and based on practice in implementing the Distraint Law, the government will propose certain amendments. The bill will most likely be presented to the cabinet this Thursday, so that if at all possible, it can be adopted before parliament goes into recess, that is 15 July," he said.
