Plenković: Dubravka Šuica renominated for European Commission
Incumbent European Commission Vice-President Dubravka Šuica has been nominated again as a member of the Commission based on her performance and political legitimacy, but it is not yet time to speculate on which portfolio she will manage, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said.
Dubravka Šuica, the Commissioner for Demography and Democracy and one of the vice-presidents of the Commission, addressed the Croatian parliament's committee on European affairs today about her work so far and the priorities of the next European Commission. The demography portfolio was included in the current Commission at Croatia's initiative, and today, at the EU level, it is being said more and more that it would be good for all member states to establish appropriate ministries, she said.
At the beginning this month, the Croatian government re-nominated her for membership in the Commission for the term from 2024 to 2029.
The former mayor of Dubrovnik and former member of both the Croatian and European parliaments is once again Croatia's candidate for the Commission based on her results, Prime Minister Plenković said.
She has been elected to the European Parliament four times, is familiar with its work, knows the workings of the European Commission, is a vice-president of the European People's Party, collaborates excellently with the Croatian government, has visited all the EU countries, and works on issues that are extremely important to Croatia, he said.
Plenković would not yet reveal which portfolio Šuica will manage, but hinted that she would have a directorate-general and suggested that Croatia has aspirations for certain portfolios and is lobbying in that direction.
First, it is necessary to wait for the entire architecture of the new Commission, he added.
