Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Saturday he empathised and understood the family of missing Croatian sea captain Dino Miskic.

After it was officially announced earlier today that the search for seven crew of the Bourbon Rhode ship, including Miskic, had ended, his family appealed to Plenkovic, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and the government to help so that the search could resume.

"We are in contact with the French authorities. Our embassy in Paris has been requesting and receiving information, a number of times every day, on everything that happened after the ship sank. The area that was searched, by the French army's naval forces and the US air forces, is twice the size of Croatia," Plenkovic told reporters in Zadar.

Unfortunately, the French ship sank in the middle of the Atlantic, between the Canary Islands and Guyana, and the search efforts lasted very long, he said.

"Today we have been informed that the search has stopped, but this doesn't mean that a commercial ship passing through that area doesn't have the obligation to monitor and watch for any new information and if somebody may have been found."

He said the intensive communication and the family and the French authorities would continue.
