PM: It would be good to have better opposition

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on Wednesday commented on Question Time in parliament and underscored that his government is continuing with structural reforms, stable finances and attracting investments and that it would be better for Croatian society to have a better opposition.

I believe that the key message is that the government, faced with problems that have accumulated for years, is seeking solutions and continuing with reforms, Plenkovic underlined in a statement to the press. When asked about relations with the opposition, he said that it would be good for Croatian society to have a better opposition.

As for the possibility of conducting a debate in parliament about the stances of one parliamentarian, he underscored that it is up to parliament to set the items on the agenda but that in his opinion that would not be good.

"Not even in the worst phases of communism was it examined what an elected representative thought and I will not allow that sort of manipulation."

Asked whether he would go to a protest rally called for October 13 by Vukovar Mayor Ivan Penava (HDZ) because of the state's slowness in prosecuting war crimes committed in Vukovar, Plenkovic said "you don't expect the prime minister to protest against Croatian state institutions."

In that context, he underlined that the state prosecution is independent and the police directorate also acts in accordance with the law and not according to orders or instructions.

"The parliamentary majority's stance is clear, war crimes have to be investigated, prosecuted and convicted in accordance with the relevant legal procedures. A special legal group has been set up that is working with dedication. It is necessary to separate attempts of manipulation, usurpation and abuse of a topic that affects the most vulnerable and most sensitive group in society, those who have lost everything," the prime minister concluded.
