PM: Law on Croatian language enables its unfettered development

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said today that with the adoption of the Croatian Language Act, the language will for the first time receive the necessary institutional framework that enables its unfettered development, to the benefit of the Croatian people and Croatian culture.

After the national parliament adopted the law. Plenković said that the promotion of the culture of the Croatian language in official and public use and its further development in the future will be discussed by experts within the Croatian Language Council.

The government, in cooperation with the Council, will adopt the National Croatian Language Policy Plan, which will further protect and encourage the development of the Croatian language as an intangible cultural asset and as an irreplaceable common means of communication.

He stressed that the law in no way limits the freedom of literary and artistic expression, nor does it regulate private communication.

"Although some critics have expressed such fears, they are completely unfounded because this is not the purpose of this law," he said.
