Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on Thursday expressed hope that a consensus would be reached about the re-election of the current European Council President Donald Tusk despite some opposition from his homeland, Poland.

The Croatian premier was participating in a two-day EU summit meeting in Brussels, which began on Thursday.

Ahead of the start of the summit, Plenkovic, who is at the helm of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), attended a meeting of the European People's Party (EPP).

The election of the European Council president was the first item on the summit meeting's agenda.

Later on Thursday, the EU summit is expected to discuss the current developments in Southeast Europe.

I am glad that after a number of years the European Council will again find words of encouragement and support to the countries in the southeast of Europe on their journey towards the EU. Croatia finds it important that the EU enlargement continues, Plenkovic said.
