Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Zlatko Zevrnja on Friday laid  a foundation stone for the construction of an analytical laboratory for the Galenski pharmaceutical company.

The laboratory will be located in the Podi business zone in Dugopolje near the southern Adriatic city of Split. The investment is valued at HRK 70 million and the lab will employ about 70 people.

"We are gathered here to launch the important construction of a new Galenski analytical laboratory and in that way we have shown enterprise, initiative and that we recognise what Dalmatia abounds with, and that is medicinal herbs, which will be used to prepare various cosmetics, creams and syrups and anything else that Dalmatia can offer this industry with its medicinal herbs," Plenkovic said.

He added that the Croatian government wholeheartedly supported the initiative and that this is a sign of the entrepreneurial spirit of Dugopolje to utilise its advantages because it is located in the vicinity of a motorway and Split.

"I believe that that entrepreneurial spirit will contribute to even better economic growth and the development of Split-Dalmatia county, which fits into the recent wider trend and the positive assessments we are getting, not just from our institutions but from international ones too, saying that Croatia is on the right path," Plenkovic said.

He underscored that the entrepreneurial spirit in Dugopolje has been recognised throughout Croatia. "You are a role model to many in Croatia who would like to have had such development over the past 20 or so years," he said.

Zevrnja said that over the past 20 years about 90 commercial buildings had been built in Dugopolje, with investors investing about ten billion kuna and employing 3,500 people.

"This laboratory in Dugopolje is exceptionally important as it will be the first of its kind in Croatia's south, as similar laboratories exist in Rijeka and Zagreb," he said.

The investor into the Galenski laboratory in Dugopolje is the association of Split-Dalmatia County pharmacies.

Construction will last about two years and once completed it will employ highly educated experts with careers in technology, analysis, control of medicines and registered products, said the director of the association, Ante Mihanoic. The laboratory will make it possible to upgrade about 200 Galenski products already being made in the Split area, and to export on the European and global markets, he added.
