PM Plenkovic replies to Cerar's letter

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on Wednesday responded to a letter sent by his Slovenian counterpart Miro Cerar by inviting him to visit Zagreb for talks on all outstanding issues, including the border dispute, the Office of the Croatian Prime Minister said in a press release.

Cerar on Monday sent a letter to Plenkovic proposing the establishment of a joint commission for border demarcation that would be based on the arbitration ruling which Croatia does not recognise.

"Slovenia's commitment to good neighbourly relations and dialogue with Croatia is a good foundation for the continuation of the dialogue launched in Ljubljana," Plenkovic wrote in the letter.

"I would like to take this opportunity to once again invite you to talks to take place in Zagreb at a mutually convenient time," Plenkovic wrote.

He added that both countries were well aware of each other's positions on the matter.

"Differences in our positions should not prevent us from finding a concrete solution in a constructive atmosphere and in the spirit of partnership and mutual understanding to the benefit of our countries and peoples," Plenkovic said.

The Croatian PM suggested that all outstanding issues between the two countries, including the border dispute, should be dealt with at the meeting.

Following Plenkovic's recent speech before the UN General Assembly, Cerar canceled their meeting, scheduled to be held in Zagreb on September 27.

Commenting on Plenkovic's speech, in which the Croatian prime minister said that the arbitration process had been contaminated and was not binding on Croatia, Cerar said that Plenkovic's position was unacceptable and that Slovenia insisted on the implementation of the border arbitration ruling.
