The awards given to Croatia's winning athletes will be raised by 100%, as it is appropriate and it is what the outstanding athletes deserve, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Saturday after the opening ceremony of the Junior World Championships 2017 in judo in Zagreb.

Asked by the press about the preparation of new legislation on sports and a new strategy for sports development, the prime minister said that the Education and Sport Ministry's state secretary Janica Kostelic and other experts were dealing with the matter in a responsible manner.

The premier said that Croatia could be proud of its athletes and the national sports associations.

The athletes, associations and families and individuals have done a marvellous job in the first 25 years of the independence of Croatia. They have done much for our promotion and international positioning, Plenkovic said.

Apart from the job done by our institutions, diplomats, tourist sector, culture and arts in connection with Croatia's promotion, sports are the most discernible and people identify Croatia with our outstanding athletes, he said.
