Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, accompanied by Defence Minister Damir Krsticevic and fire chief Slavko Tucakovic, on Friday visited firefighters and soldiers engaged in putting out a large wildfire in Kistanje municipality, inland from the coastal city of Sibenik.

"I wish to thank everyone for their selfless contribution in the last four days to putting out the fire. I thank all the personnel on the ground for everything they have done to successfully defend the houses and prevent loss of life," Plenkovic said.

Krsticevic said that the fire had been contained thanks to a timely response and coordinated action by the local community and the emergency services. He said that about 50 army servicemen had been engaged in the firefighting effort since Wednesday.

Krsticevic said that the firefighters and servicemen who have been putting out this fire would take part in the Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day parade in Knin on Saturday.

Tucakovic stressed the need to amend the Fire Service Act after the fire season was over in order to rectify the shortcomings observed.

The fire broke out on Tuesday and has not been extinguished yet. 124 firefighters and 37 vehicles are on the ground battling the blaze.
