His Excellency
Barack Obama
President
of the United States of America
Dear Mr. President,
Upon your inauguration as the 44th President of the United States of America, and on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Croatia and in my personal capacity, allow me to extend to you my sincere congratulations and best wishes as you undertake this high and responsible office.
The relationship between our two countries has never been stronger, and I look forward to working with you and your administration in advancing our relations even further. I especially look forward to continuing our close cooperation within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. With Croatia’s accession to the Alliance expected within the coming months, I am confident that as allies we will continue to find common ground as we pursue our shared foreign policy objectives.
As you know, 2009 will be a historic year for Croatia as well. In addition to being welcomed into the NATO family of nations, we also plan on completing our European Union accession negotiations by the end of this year. The United States has been a steadfast supporter of Croatia on our path towards Euro-Atlantic integration, and I look forward to counting on the continued support of the United States and her citizens.
Croatia has always had a special relationship with the United States. When Croatia found herself in difficult times of foreign occupation or foreign rule, the United States welcomed our citizens offering them a life of liberty and prosperity. Today, as an established democracy, Croatia is ready to work with the United States in providing the same hope to other nations in need.
Mr. President, I welcome the message of hope that you have brought, not only to the United States, but also to the entire globe. Looking forward to discussing with you issues of common interest, I wish you much success in all of your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ivo Sanader
