Croatia is firmly at the core of the European project of peace, cooperation and solidarity, respected by its partners

On the occasion of celebrating the Statehood Day and the tenth anniversary of Croatian membership in the European Union, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković pointed out that Croatian citizens should be proud of all the achievements in the first three decades of independence. They should also be pleased that in the tenth year of membership in the European Union we realized two goals of deeper integration by becoming a member of Schengen area and the Eurozone. "This means that we are firmly at the core of the European project of peace, cooperation and solidarity, that we are respected by our partners and that by using this strengthened international position we realize tasks and goals more easily and quickly," he said.

Statehood Day and the 10th anniversary of Croatia's membership in the European Union, was marked tonight with a festive concert at the Croatian National Theatre.

"33 years ago, the Croatian people had the opportunity to vote in democratic elections for the first time. This fact of constituting the first democratically elected, multi-party Croatian Parliament marked the beginning of the path to the creation of a modern, free and internationally recognized Republic of Croatia", the Prime Minister pointed out.

It was the origin of all subsequent decisions - from the Christmas Constitution in 1990, the referendum in May 1991, to the important decisions of June 25 and October 8, 1991. Ultimately, he added, it led to international recognition, and among the key recognitions was that of a member state of the European Union on January 15, 1992, and everything was crowned in May with Croatia's membership in the United Nations.

A unique historical period for the Croatian people

"These little more than three decades have been a unique historical period for the Croatian people, in which we achieved our freedom, our independence and independence at the turning points for the European continent, with the fall of the Iron Curtain and the demolition of the Berlin Wall. Therefore, even today, we should remember the visionary and statesmanlike actions of the first president Franjo Tuđman, the convocations of parliament and governments at the time, and above all the determination and courage of the Croatian veterans who defended Croatia in the Homeland War", said the Prime Minister, stressing that today we can look back on those times with pride.

We should, he added, be satisfied that in the tenth year of membership in the European Union we have achieved two goals of deeper integration by becoming a member of the Schengen area and the Eurozone.

This means, he said, that we are firmly at the core of the European project of peace, cooperation and solidarity, that our partners respect us, and that by using this strengthened international position, we realize tasks and goals more easily and quickly.

These goals are, above all, economic progress, social well-being, balanced regional development and strong democratic institutions in which the rule of law is respected, human rights are protected, minority rights are respected, and it contributes to solving numerous complex international issues.

"Today, Croatia is strong, it believes in itself, it respects its past, it believes in its better future, and only through unity can the Croatian people and everyone who lives in this country be sure that they will achieve all the goals that are ahead of us," he said. Prime Minister Plenković.
