The leaders of the member states of the European Union ended the summit meeting by agreeing on leading positions in the European institutions for the next institutional cycle, after which Prime Minister Andrej Plenković expressed his satisfaction that the former President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has the opportunity to renew her mandate.
"Given the kind of mandate she had, as we also had difficult and complicated government mandates with crisis management, and given everything that was jointly done in the interest of the citizens and economies of all EU members, I am glad that she has the opportunity to renew that mandate,'' Plenković said.
In a press statement after the summit, he reiterated that three key topics were discussed.
The EU Strategic Program for 2024-2029
The first of them is the adoption of the strategic agenda, which represents the work program of the European Council for the next five years. This program contains everything that is important for strengthening the European Union and its role at the international level, and joint activities in the security aspect, in the fight against illegal migration, green transition and digital transformation, and demographic revitalization.
"All these topics are contained in this document, which will be a kind of guide and political narrative agreed at the level of the leaders of the member states," said Plenković.
Further European support to Ukraine
As another important topic, he highlighted the arrival of Ukrainian President Zelensky, with whom European leaders exchanged opinions on the situation in Ukraine and further support for his country.
The Croatian Prime Minister said that the conclusions reached reflected the situation in Ukraine, as well as consistent European political, financial and military support.
The third key topic was the agreement about the leaders of the three European institutions. As expected, the European Council proposes to the European Parliament that Ursula von der Leyen once again become the President of the European Commission for the next five years.
The Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa is to be the President of the European Council for the next two and a half years, and the Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas the High Representative for Foreign Affairs.
"Those decisions were made tonight, and with that we practically concluded, along with the discussion of a number of other current topics, today's European Council and the work before the summer break," said the Prime Minister.
