Government adopts humanitarian mine clearance plan for 2013

The Croatian government on Thursday adopted a humanitarian mine clearance plan for 2013, under which it planned to have 68.1 square kilometres of land cleared of mines left over from the 1991-1995 war.

A total of 685.5 square kilometres of land is still infested with unexploded mines in 99 towns and municipalities in 12 counties and those areas are marked with 14,000 signs warning of the danger of land mines, Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said at the Cabinet meeting.

HRK 294.4 million has been approved for mine removal operations this year, and the plan provides for such operations in Virovitica-Podravina County, Krka National Park and Papuk Nature Park, Ostojic said.

Deputy Defence Minister Visnja Tafra said that the plan also provided for the removal of unexploded ordnance from military installations measuring a total of 690,000 square metres in area, which would be carried out by a Croatian Army engineers' regiment.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković met today with the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Mark Rutte, who is on a working visit to Croatia. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković described today's meeting in Paris as important because many countries, each in their own way, have expressed their willingness to participate in the Coalition of the Willing. Some, he explained, will participate with forces that would be on the ground in Ukraine if a ceasefire were to occur and an agreement were reached, while other countries, such as Croatia, which will not send its soldiers to Ukrainian territory, will continue to provide political, diplomatic and military support to that country. He also considers it crucial to reach an agreement that would enable a lasting, just and sustainable peace.

As a guarantor of Dayton Agreement, Croatia will not waver in commitment to stability, equality and European path of BiH

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković participated today in the international conference "30 years after Dayton: leading the way with local solutions". On that occasion, he emphasized that Croatia, as a guarantor of the Dayton Agreement and as a member of the European Union and NATO, will not give up its commitment to stability, equality and the European path of Bosnia and Herzegovina. "Our only interest is the same one that we defended in the 1990s. A stable, functional and prosperous neighboring country in which Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats, like all other citizens, enjoy equal rights and equal dignity and where no one feels like a second-class citizen in their own country", he said. It is crucial to implement the Constitution in a way that strengthens, not undermines, trust between the three constituent peoples and to avoid practices that deviate from the spirit of the agreement or create unnecessary and harmful misunderstandings.
