Croatia must strengthen its own defense industry and cannot just buy weapons and equipment, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ivan Anušić said in Warsaw. Anušić noted that Croatia's defense spending this year reached NATO's target of 2 percent of GDP.

"We need to develop processes that will be able to absorb these funds with the best effect, because Croatia cannot only buy weapons and equipment, but must also produce them," the minister announced on the first day of the gathering in Warsaw, where the Security Forum and the informal meeting of the European Union's defense ministers are taking place.

We plan to increase the share of defense investment to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2027.

The ministers are discussing the possibilities of spending the 150 billion euros available to EU members, the minister said, adding that Croatia will find a way to best use the funds for the development of its defense industry.

Despite the investments, Croatia cannot produce all weapons and equipment itself, warns Anušić, so it still depends on cooperation for the purchase of certain equipment.

The minister also announced that Croatia plans to increase the share of defense investment to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2027.
