Croatia has logged 1,767 new COVID cases in the past 24 hours, Health Minister Vili Beroš told the cabinet on Thursday, warning that although the numbers of new cases are stagnating, COVID is still present.

Compared to last Thursday there have been 11.62% fewer cases and there are still 651 hospitalised COVID patients, 37 of whom are on ventilators.

The hospital admission numbers are stagnating and on average about seventy new patients are hospitalised a day, most of them with serious symptoms, added Beroš.

He claimed that hospitals are continuing to gradually reduce their capacities in COVID wards in order to provide all patients with the necessary treatment.

As of yesterday, 5,225,571 doses of vaccines had been administered with 70.69% of the population receiving the first dose and 27.24% of the adult population having received the booster shot.

BA.2 variant spreading in Croatia

Beroš warned that COVID is still here because the number of new cases throughout Europe is growing even though the level of vaccination is good. He called for extra caution due to the huge influx of people from Ukraine and the low level of people who have been vaccinated in Europe's neighbourhoods, particularly in Africa.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has stressed that the incidence rate in the EU is increasing and the number of hospitalised patients and possible deaths are expected to increase.

In Croatia, the numbers are stagnating however the share of the BA.2 variant is increasing and currently accounts for 43% of samples.
