Croatia again among EU states with largest year on year falls in unemployment

In July 2015, Croatia was once again among the European Union member states with the largest year-on-year falls in unemployment but remained among those with the highest youth unemployment rates, the EU statistical office, Eurostat, said on Tuesday.

In July 2015, seasonally-adjusted unemployment in Croatia, according to the International Labour Organisation definition, slipped to 15.1 percent from 15.4 percent in June, falling for the fifth consecutive month. According to Eurostat data, 288,888 Croatians were jobless in July 2015, 5,000 less on the month and 33,000 on the year.
 
In July 2015, Croatia's unemployment rate fell 1.8 percentage points on the year, which put it among the EU countries with the largest decreases alongside Bulgaria, Spain, Greece, Portugal and Ireland. In June, Croatia's unemployment rate fell 1.6 pp on the year.
 
In the EU 28, unemployment in July 2015 was 9.5%, the lowest since June 2011. In June 2015, it was 9.6% and in July 2014 it stood at 10.2%. In the EU 28, 23.067 million people were out of work in July 2015, 232,000 less on the month.
 
Youth unemployment in Croatia was 43.1%, putting Croatia among the member states with the highest youth unemployment alongside Greece (51.8% in May 2015) and Spain (48.6%). Germany had the lowest youth unemployment rate (7%), followed by Malta (8.7%) and Estonia (9.5%).
 
In the EU28, youth unemployment in July 2015 was 20.4%, as against 20.6% in June 2015 and 22% in July 2014, with 4.634 million young people without a job, 465,000 less than in July 2014.
