Croatia could lead in EU small combat drone production, says defence minister
Croatia is ready to take a leading role within the European Union in the production of small combat drones, with half a million units potentially being produced already this year, Defence Minister Ivan Anušić said in Brussels.
“We are prepared to take the lead in the production of small combat drones, which can be financed through the ReArm Europe plan,” Anušić said following a meeting of European defence ministers. The ministers discussed military support for Ukraine and the development of member states' defence capabilities, focusing on the implementation of the White Paper for European Defence - Readiness 2030 and the ReArm Europe plan.
Anušić said the drones would be produced by Croatian companies and would be entirely Croatian-made products.
“Production could reach half a million units per year, and already this year we could scale up to that level. Of course, if we officially take the leading role, that figure would continue to grow.”
He said Croatia was also interested in participating in EU-level joint procurement of radar systems, air defence systems and tanks.
“Croatia is currently working on this and plans to procure such armaments, potentially making use of the European Defence Agency.”
