Croatian FM meets Iraqi Kurdistan parliament speaker

Croatian First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign and European Affairs Minister Vesna Pusic on Tuesday held talks with the Speaker of the Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament, Yousif Muhammed, and with Nawzad Hadi, the Governor of Erbil, the capital of the booming Kurdistan region.

Pusic also visited two refugee camps - Baharka and Ankawa - which accommodate Christians who escaped the attacks of the Islamic State (ISIS), the Croatian foreign ministry said in a statement.

Pusic and Yousif Muhammed talked about Croatia's readiness to cooperate in all areas - from the economy to the defence. Pusic underscored that by fighting against ISIS, Peshmerga (the military forces of Iraqi Kurdistan) are protecting not only this region, but they are defending the entire Europe. She added that Croatia was prepared to provide development assistance, given that it also went through a war recently and provided for refugees and displaced persons.

Upon her arrival in Erbil on Monday evening, Pusic held talks with Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Idris Barzani about the situation in the region and relations with the central authorities in Baghdad.
