Croatian PM to attend EU summit on combating youth unemployment

European Union heads of state or government will convene in Brussels on Thursday and Friday to discuss youth unemployment which in some countries is at record levels.

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic will attend the two day summit as an observer.

Before the summit, Milanovic is expected to open an exhibition called "Welcome Croatia" outside the European Parliament and take part in a meeting of heads of state and government and deputy prime ministers from the Party of European Socialists (PES).

In the letter to EU leaders, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said the meeting in Brussels would primarily focus on how to combat youth unemployment.

"I would like to put the fight against unemployment high on our agenda. The number of unemployed people in our Union, especially of young people, is at record levels. It has become one of the most pressing issues in most, if not all, of our Member States. That is why we must do our utmost to deal with it together."European Investment Bank President Warner Hoyer and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso are expected to present their joint report on financing the economies.
