Croatian PM to chair U.N. Security Council session next week

ZAGREB, Dec 11 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader will chair a session of the U.N. Security Council in New York next week dedicated to the situation in Somalia and the fight against piracy.

On 2 December, the Security Council adopted measures aimed at strengthening international cooperation in fighting rampant piracy, notably off the coast of Somalia.

The United Nations launched an initiative to hold a session dedicated to the situation in Somalia on 16 December and other member countries supported it. The session is also expected to be attended by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, foreign ministers and other senior officials of Security Council member states.

Croatian President Stjepan Mesic was in New York this week. He also chaired a U.N. Security Council debate on global terrorism. The topic was moved by Croatia, which chairs the Security Council as a nonpermanent member.
