Croatian PM visits Macquarie University in Sydney

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, who is on a working visit to Australia, visited Macquarie University in Sydney on Monday and signed an agreement securing the continuation of financing of the Centre for Croatian Studies at Macquarie University, in the amount of AUD 150,000 per year over the next five years, the Australian media reported.

At its conference call last week, the Croatian government endorsed the draft agreement on the continuation of financing of the pioneering centre that teaches Croatian Studies to about 200 students and that has seen about 2000 students pass through its doors since its inception 31 years ago.

Milanovic met with the University's Chancellor Michael Egan and Vice-Chancellor S Bruce Dowton.

Egan said the support would afford fantastic opportunities for students. "Later this year we will see a partnership between Croatian Studies and the University's Department of Ancient History, which will take students and staff from Macquarie to undertake archaeological excavations in Dalmatia, to an area inhabited continuously since Neolithic times," he said.

Professor S Bruce Dowton said the association reflected the University's continuing commitment to connect Macquarie with the world.

"We are among the nation's leading providers of education for international students with about a third of our students coming from overseas, and we have numerous international collaborations in learning and teaching as well as in research."
