EP chief Schulz and PM Milanovic visit flood-hit east Croatia

European Parliament President Martin Schulz, who is the leader of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament and their candidate for President of the European Commission in the ongoing elections, and Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Friday toured Gunja and other eastern Croatian areas ravaged by floods and on that occasion the German politician expressed solidarity and compassion with local people hit by the devastating flooding.

Milanovic reiterated that Croatia would apply for assistance from the European Union's funds to offset the consequences of this natural disaster and added that his cabinet on Thursday adopted several concrete decisions to help alleviate the effects of this flooding.

Schulz recalled that his country and some other European countries had been hit by flooding in June 2013 when several people lost their lives and large-scale material damage was caused, and added that such situations elicited compassion from everyone.

After visiting the worst-hit areas in Croatia, Schulz said that the European Parliament would have to consider ways to help Croatia.
