Croatia is planning to invest some 1.3 billion euros available from EU funds into transport infrastructure by 2020, government officials said in Split on Friday during a conference on European Union funds.

"EUR 300 million, to be provided from EU funds, will be invested in the construction of Peljesac Bridge, 250 million euros will be invested to upgrade Dubrovnik Airport. That is EUR 550 million euros in all, which is a record high investment in the south of Croatia," Deputy Prime Minister Branko Grcic said.

Speaking of the future bridge to connect the southernmost part of Croatia with the rest of the country, Grcic expressed confidence that a feasibility study would opt for the bridge as the solution.

Grcic, who also serves as Minister for Regional Development and EU Funds, said that EU funds would be used to construct bypass roads around coastal towns in Dalmatia.

Deputy Transport Minister Zdenko Antesic said that of 10 billion kuna intended for transport infrastructure in Croatia by 2020, three billion kuna would be allocated for road projects, while 3.8 billion kuna was intended for rail transport, 1.2 billion kuna would be spent on city and commuter traffic, HRK 700 million for Dubrovnik Airport, and the rest would go towards improving connections between Adriatic islands and the mainland.
