Gov't proposes Drazen Jelenic for post of Chief State Prosecutor

The Croatian government on Tuesday proposed that Deputy Chief State Prosecutor Drazen Jelenic be appointed the new Chief State Prosecutor, Justice Minister Drazen Bosnjakovic said.

Addressing reporters outside Government House, Bosnjakovic said that Jelenic had served as president of the State Judicial Council, municipal prosecutor and county prosecutor and that the government was confident that he would be able to respond to the challenges of his new position.

The government will forward its proposal for Jelenic's appointment to the parliament today. It expects the parliamentary Judiciary Committee to convene to discuss the proposal, after which the item will be put on the parliament's agenda for a discussion and a vote.

"We think that we will be able to finish everything by April 24, when incumbent Chief State Prosecutor Dinko Cvitan's term expires," Bosnjakovic said.

Asked about Cvitan's performance, Bosnjakovic said that his term was nearing its end and that it was the government's right to propose a different candidate.

"We believe that this will bring new energy and a new approach," he said, noting that his ministry would work on a new law on criminal proceedings to remove existing shortcomings and define new deadlines.
