Government adopts amendments to Science and Higher Education Act

The Croatian government on Friday passed amendments to the Science and Higher Education Act that were expected to set the course of development of science and higher education in the country.

"I expect this bill to set the course of development of science and higher education in Croatia and be a step in preparing a Strategy for the Development of Education, Science and Technology by July 1 as a contribution to Croatia's accession to the European Union," Science, Education and Sport Minister Zeljko Jovanovic said at the Cabinet meeting.
He noted that the bill paved the way for the development of a higher education, science and innovation system that would focus on the common good and the needs of society at large as well as on increasing the competitiveness of Croatia internationally.
As a novelty, the bill abolishes the obligation for scientists and university teachers to advance in their jobs, allowing them to choose the course of their career.
