Government adopts restructuring programme for HRT

The government on Thursday adopted a restructuring plan for HRT and instructed the public broadcaster to start implementing it as soon as possible.

The main objective is to improve the quality of programming of public interest and to increase own productions. The government also requested that all necessary supporting and operational documents be adopted within the next 45 days.

The restructuring programme provides for downsizing of the staff, which Culture Minister Andrea Zlatar Violic said would be carried out in consultations with the Staff Council and in conformity with the Labour Act, for cost restructuring and technological modernisation.

Zlatar Violic later told the press that it was a general plan covering nearly a four-year period and therefore needed to be elaborated with supporting documents.

According to the plan, the cost of restructuring in 2014 and 2015 would be HRK 303.2 million, of which HRK 200 million would go towards technology and HRK 83 million towards severance packages.

The government instructed the Public Administration Ministry and the State Bureau of Statistics to verify the number and authenticity of signatures in the petition for a referendum filed by the civil initiative "In the Name of the Family", who seek a constitutional amendment to ensure that marriage is defined as a union between a man and a woman.

The government also sent to parliament a new bill on counselling for young people, which should ensure greater participation of young people in decision making at local level.
