Housing reconstruction in flood-hit area to be completed by Aug 15

The reconstruction of family houses damaged in floods that hit the Sava river valley at Zupanja in eastern Croatia in May 2014, will be mostly completed by August 15, and everyone entitled to reconstruction will have their homes rebuilt, Zoning and Construction Minister Anka Mrak Taritas said on Thursday.

Mrak Taritas said that she expected around 2,100 houses to be completed and fully livable by August 15. Another 100 or so houses will be rebuilt after that date, she said, adding that this was due to ongoing legal proceedings concerning problems with property-rights relations.

The minister made the statements after touring construction sites in Racinovci and Gunja, communities hit by last year's floods.

She said that after August 15, house fronts, commercial facilities and houses whose reconstruction had started lately would be completed.

The minister said that so far 1,805 houses in the flood-hit areas had been renovated and were livable.

The ministry has issued 2,272 decisions to rebuild family houses in the flood-affected areas. Of the 1,805 reconstructed houses, 1,132 were rebuilt by their owners who were given money by the state to do it, while 673 houses were reconstructed by the state. A total of 467 houses are being rebuilt and most of them (405) are being rebuilt by the state.
