Minister announces higher quotas for foreign workers in tourism sector

Tourism Minister Gari Cappelli said ahead of a cabinet meeting on Thursday that the quota for foreign workers in the tourism sector would be increased to 15,000 due to a bigger need for tourism workers.

"The quota will most definitely be raised by several thousand. Judging by our needs, I think the quota should reach 15,000, of which 30% to 40% will be seasonal workers and the rest will probably be permanent workers," Capelli said.

The overall annual quota for work permits for foreign nationals in Croatia for 2018 is 38,769.

Hospitality and tourism have 7,930 work permits, along with another 2,040 permits for seasonal work in agriculture, forestry, tourism and hospitality.

Commenting on a reporter's claim that Labour and Pension System Minister Marko Pavic was trying to activate the domestic workforce, Cappelli said a number of activities were planned in Osijek, Split and other cities aimed at activating domestic labour.

He said that the first job fairs in Croatian cities would be held on 18 January.

The goal is to use the domestic workforce to the maximum, which includes retraining and other measures, and once this is exhausted, we will approach (foreign worker) quotas, Cappelli said.
