New institute for children's oncology inaugurated
Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic attended on Monday the opening of the Children's Oncology and Hematology Institute at Zagreb's Sisters of Mercy hospital, which will start treating children as of June 1
"This is an example of how the state can remove a barrier that existed for years and was not dealt with because of negligent and disinterested authorities," Milanovic said, adding that a little over two months had passed between the idea to transfer the oncology department from the Children's Hospital and its realisation.
"Nobody saw an interest in that, which is sad. Our interest is to deal with the problems society is in," he said, adding that the institute was important for children and their parents.
Health Minister Sinisa Varga said the government had invested HRK 3 million (approx. EUR 400,000) in the institute, which has 30 beds and will employ 19 new members of medical staff, including three doctors.
