Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said at the start of a cabinet meeting on Thursday that Croatia had never before faced a crisis of this kind, referring to the coronavirus pandemic that has so far infected 102 people in the country.

"Croatia has never before faced a crisis of this kind. The measures that were taken yesterday are even stricter than those that were in place during the (1991-1995) Homeland War, when it comes to the regime of living throughout the country," the prime minister said, announcing that he would address the nation on television in the evening.

"This is an extraordinary situation and we have to get used to it. Life and the functioning of the state must continue. We all need to demonstrate responsibility, as individuals, the institutions and society, and be up to the challenge," the prime minister said.

Plenkovic once again appealed for responsible and solidary behaviour and advised elderly citizens to exercise extra caution and follow recommendations from the health authorities.

"The experience of other countries, where unforunately there have been many deaths, shows that (the virus) mostly affects the elderly. That's why once again I appeal to everyone to stay in your homes and do not put yourselves at risk. Under the present circumstances self-discipline and responsibility is of paramount importance," the prime minister said.
